If you’ve been on the hunt for some fun Halloween finger food ideas, look no further than my S’mores Charcuterie Board — it really puts the “cute” in charcuterie! Half Halloween dessert table and half cheese plate, my delectably spooky grazing board is packed with an assortment of treats so everyone has something to nibble on before heading out on a Trick-or-Treating adventure.

Halloween is Joe’s favorite holiday, so I’ve been stepping up my game every year since we met in 2015. From DIY ghosts hanging from our front trees to zombie dolls climbing out of our lawn, cute headstones in the garden to Jack-o-lanterns in all shapes and sizes, the Halloween spirit is in full display at our house for the entirety of October and much of November.

And, since we love to host a Halloween bonfire every year, it seemed like leveling up my spooky food game seemed like a good idea. This year, I’m taking our normal s’mores campfire setup and giving it a whole new holiday twist. Enter: my Halloween s’mores-gas-bord. It's so cute, it'll make you want to do the Monster Mash.

With a wide assortment of s’mores candies, Halloween Peeps, cookies, graham crackers, spreads, and cheeses, there are tons of opportunities to make the best, most unique s’mores you’ve ever tried. Plus, it’s easy to make adorably festive with a few creative twists!

What is a S’mores Board?

A s’mores board is essentially the dessert version of a charcuterie board or a cheese plate. The idea is to put out all kinds of tasty treats for people to make their own perfect version of a s’more. Think dips and spreads, different types of cookies and crackers, chocolate bars and marshmallows, all arranged in a visually pleasing way.

Just like with charcuterie, there are no hard and set rules. You’re welcome to set out anything that you think would be delicious! In this particular “recipe,” I’m approaching the s’mores charcuterie board with a true smorgasbord in mind — both sweet and savory snacks ready for grazing over the course of the evening.

Why You’ll Love This Fancy S’mores Board

Between getting everyone in costume and handing out candy to kiddos, sitting down for a proper meal on Halloween always feels out of reach. That’s why I love the idea of a grazing board! People can come and go as they please, snacking on sweet or savory goodies depending on what they crave.

Aside from being a literal smorgasbord of tasty snacking options, this Halloween s’mores platter is also:

  • Quick & Easy - Just like a traditional charcuterie plate, this loaded s’mores board is a snap to put together. Just grab your favorite cookies, candies, crackers, cheeses, fruits, and spreads, then artfully arrange everything on a large board.
  • Totally Customizable - Whether you are dealing with dietary limitations (e.g. vegan or gluten-free) or want to make a Valentine’s or football-themed s’mores caddy, feel free to swap in any of the ingredients or decorations that will make you smile! Keep reading — I have tons of fun ideas for you below.
  • Versatile - Boasting everything from the ultimate s’mores-making supplies to fruit, cheese, nuts, and more, this spooky snack board really has it all. In fact, I like to call it a S’mores-gas-bord because there are so many tasty sweet and savory combinations to try!
  • Perfect for Cleaning Out the Pantry - I always like to do a big kitchen and pantry edit before the hullabaloo of the holidays. Use this as an opportunity to use up all the bits and bobs — the tail end of sweet jams can be mixed to make a "spooky sludge" and you can use up all the crackers and cookies you have open. Feel free to extend this to breakfast items too — you can always make a Banana Split parfait bar for the kiddos to help themselves.

Ingredients & Substitutions

The great thing about making a s’mores board is there are no set rules. Aside from having the absolute basics — marshmallows, graham crackers, and chocolate bars — you’re welcome to use whatever your witchy little heart desires. Here’s what I’m putting out this year:

ingredients needed to make a halloween s'mores smorgasbord.
  • Chocolate Hummus - Feel free to swap in the chocolatey dip of choice (e.g. edible brownie batter or homemade Nutella). This will be your spider.
  • Cream Cheese Fruit Dip - You're welcome to swap in the sweet dip of choice. Add a few drops of green gel food coloring or a tablespoon or so of matcha powder so you can turn it into a Frankenstein face! Or, keep it white and decorate with sprinkles to make a sugar skull.
  • Apple Butter - Apples are perfect for the season, but you're welcome to use the jam or fruit preserve of your choice. If you have a bunch of open jams you're trying to get rid of, you can also mix them together to make a "spooky sludge" dip!
  • Mild Cheese (soft) - My go-tos are Brie or Camembert. You can decorate the round to look like a ghost using frosting or gel cake decoration. Alternatively, use tangy goat cheese if you feel more adventurous!
  • Mild Cheese (semi-firm) - I find Havarti is a good crowd-pleasing, kid-friendly choice. Use cookie cutters to make Halloween shapes, or cut the block to look like a coffin.
  • Pretzel Thins - Or any other salty cracker-type base.
  • Graham Crackers - Use either honey, cinnamon, or chocolate (or a mix!).
  • Cookies - Fudge Stripes, chocolate chip cookies, Brown Sugar Brown Butter Shortbread Cookies, Oreos, etc. Feel free to swap in the cookie of your choice!!
  • Jumbo Marshmallows or Halloween Peeps - Roasted marshmallows are the base of any s'mores board. I love using Halloween-themed Peeps for an added boost of cuteness.
  • Fruit of Choice - Try apple slices, fresh berries, or halved bananas (still in their peels to prevent browning).
  • Mixed Nuts - For saltiness and crunch. I love honey roasted peanuts here, but feel free to use plain salted if you're concerned about the sugar levels.
  • Assorted Candy - Bust out all your favorites including different types of bar chocolate, Reese's PB cups, Kit Kats, truffles or fat bombs, or any other candy your heart desires.

Decoration Ideas

These are all optional, but are easy ways to add some spooky flair to your s'mores board.

  • Edible Candy Eyeballs
  • Pretzel Sticks to look like legs in the dips
  • Halloween Sprinkles
  • Frosting or Gel Cake Decoration
  • Edible Ink Markers
  • Plastic Insects

Suggested Equipment

  • Large Wooden Cutting Board - For arranging your s’mores charcuterie board.
  • Small Bowls - For corralling jams, spreads, or small candies on your charcuterie board.
  • Cheese Knives - Offer at least one knife per block or round of cheese. You can offer a fork for cheese that you've already cut into shapes.
  • Telescoping Marshmallow Sticks - These are the best marshmallow roasting sticks I’ve found. They have plenty of reach so you can get the perfect amount of caramelization without burning your fingers, then they collapse for easy storage. Amazing!
  • Tabletop S’mores Maker - If the weather stinks or you don’t have the outdoor space for a bonfire, grab a cute indoor version instead!
  • Plastic Insects - Having some creepy critters crawling over the cookies and candies helps your s’mores board feel more on theme.
  • Halloween Cookie Cutters - For cutting your cheese into cute shapes like ghosts or witch hats.

How To Make A S’mores Charcuterie Board

This simple Halloween grazing board takes just a few minutes to put together. Here's how it's done:

Step 1: Anchor. Place spreads and cheese on your board as your anchors. Decorate them to look like Halloween favorites. I usually make the cream cheese dip into a Frankenstein face, the chocolate hummus into a spider, and the cheese into a ghost.

Step 2: Artfully Arrange the remaining ingredients like you would a charcuterie board, but make it spooky. Use plastic critters, eyeball-shaped candies, raspberry coulis as "blood," or cotton candy as spider webs. Make sure to serve alongside some long sticks for roasting the marshmallows!

Step 3: Enjoy! Encourage your guests to play and come up with creative s'mores alternatives. You can even make a game out of "who made it best?"

Optional Variations & Dietary Adaptations

  • Vegan - Pick your favorite plant-based marshmallows, candies, cookies, and spreads.
  • Gluten-Free - Grab your favorite gluten-free cookies and crackers, then double-check that your candies and spreads are celiac-friendly too.
  • Keto/Diabetic - Opt for sugar-free marshmallows, candies, crackers, and spreads. Feel free to beef up the savory options by adding more cheeses and including deli meats.
  • Different Holidays - As far as I’m concerned, s’mores are an anytime treat. Try making a Valentine’s Day board , a 4th of July board, or an Easter-themed board using appropriate cookie cutter shapes and color-themed candies.
  • Color Themes - There’s no rule that says you need a holiday to make a board filled with s’mores-making supplies. Arrange one for your next birthday party or baby shower, choosing cookies, candies, and spreads that fit your color theme.

Expert Tips

  • Feel free to swap in store-bought dips to save time. While I love making everything from scratch, sometimes it’s just not in the cards.
  • Have a trashcan nearby for folks to toss their candy wrappers.
  • Get inspired. There are lots of ways to play with your food and make it look the Halloween part. Here are a few ideas:
    • Draw a Frankenstein, Jack Skellington, or Ghost onto any of your dips using cake decorating gel.
    • Cut a block of cheese into a coffin shape.
    • Use semi-hard cheese slices (e.g. orange cheddar) to cut into bite-sized ghosts, witch hats, or other spooky Halloween shapes using cookie cutters.
    • Use green food dye (or matcha powder) to make a Frankenstein-colored dip. Use red food dye (or beet powder) for a blood- or brain-colored dip. Use an edible ink pen or the icing of your choice to then draw brain squiggles or stitches.
    • Use candy eyeballs and plastic bugs to make your board come to life.
    • Make a cheese ball in the shape of a pumpkin.
    • Use raspberry coulis as “blood,” making vampire bites in your cheeses and dips.
  • Make a game out of it. Have a s’mores-making contest with a fun set of prizes for the Most Creative, Best Looking, & Best Tasting S’mores. Encourage your guests to go wild with their combinations. Here are a few flavor combinations to try:
    • Girl Dinner S’mores: brie, jam, & dark chocolate hummus on a butter cracker.
    • PB&J S’mores: toasted marshmallow, peanut butter cup, and fresh berries on a graham cracker.
    • Oreo S’mores: Toasted marshmallow between two Oreos. Also great with some jam!
    • M&Ms S’mores: Toasted marshmallow and your favorite bar chocolate between two M&Ms cookies.
    • Cheesy Apple Pie Peeps S’mores: Toasted Peeps, cheddar cheese, apple butter, and cinnamon sugar on a graham cracker.
    • Banoffee S’mores: Toasted marshmallow, dulce de leche, sliced banana, and milk chocolate on a brown butter brown sugar shortbread cookie.
    • The Ghost King: Candied bacon (or bacon jam), sliced banana, toasted marshmallow, peanut butter cup on a digestive biscuit.
    • Lemon Meringue Cheesecake: Toasted marshmallow, lemon curd, and cream cheese dip on shortbread.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is a s’more called a s’more?

“S’more” is a cute portmanteau of “some more” (like y’all is “you all”). The idea is that these delectable snacks are so crave-worthy, you can’t stop at one. After just one bite, you’ll be begging for s’more, please!

What constitutes a s’more?

A traditional American s’more consists of a toasted marshmallow and a bar of milk chocolate sandwiched between two graham crackers. However, I’m a firm believer that you can make a tasty s’more out of just about anything so long as there’s something melty and crackers are involved. Interpret as you will and have fun! 🤷‍♀️

What are the best s’mores candies?

That all depends on your palate! Joe’s favorites are Reese’s peanut butter cups, whereas I like spicy chili dark chocolate bars. But, any variety of bar chocolate or mini candy bar will work. Heck, I even like making s’mores with Cadbury cream eggs around Easter!
